SOUTH CAROLINA
Carolina ranked 45th in the nation in terms of the availability of mental health care providers, with just over 200 mental health care providers per 100,000 population.
Approximately 60% of adults with a mental illness in South Carolina did not receive treatment in 2018.
Substance abuse disorders were the most common form of mental illness among adults in South Carolina, with over 10% of adults reporting a substance abuse disorder in the past year.
In 2018, South Carolina ranked 50th in the nation in terms of state mental health agency funding per capita.
It is clear that mental health is a significant concern in South Carolina, and addressing the shortage of mental health professionals is an important step in improving access to care and addressing the high rates of mental illness and substance abuse in the state.
